URBAN BACHELOR PAD

URBAN BACHELOR PAD

A young professional working in the nearby financial district in Chicago purchased a modestly-scaled, urban apartment. The client wanted to create an environment that reflected his professional career, supported his active social life, and served as home base for various interests. He is an enthusiastic home cook, music collector and amateur cyclist and, his compact space houses multiple functions while enhancing and blending a range of varied activities.

The palette of the apartment is intentionally reductive, with paint colors, fabrics and accents in crisp black and white that nod to the iconic men's business suit. The charcoal gray walls are enveloping and atmospheric, creating a sense of intimacy that becomes a flattering backdrop for graphic pieces by local artist Michael McGuire. Simple, durable furnishings are upholstered in black fabrics and leather so their shapes are more sculptural. An over-scaled light fixture in the dining area punctuates the space and is an anchor and pivot point for the entire apartment. Collections of vintage stoneware and cookware are displayed rather than stowed. The look is easy, masculine, and idiosyncratic.

Urban Bachelor Pad was designed by Patrick McGuire.
