GOLD COAST TOWNHOUSE

Built in the 1880's, this townhouse sits squarely in the middle of a well-preserved pocket of Chicago's Gold Coast. Typical of homes of the neighborhood, slender lots and narrow tree-lined streets result in shadowy interiors. Modern living is challenged by long flights of stairs, lack of parking, and kitchens and casual living spaces that are inadequate or non-existent. A thoughtful remodeling by Bruce Gregga in early 1980's left an impressive stamp that could not be dismissed. The new owners, a professional couple who are active entertainers, sought to adapt the house to their youthful lives while respecting the long history of their new house.

In addition to restoring the historic façade, a new wing was planned for the rear of the house which would add a needed garage, a new kitchen and family room and an additional dressing room and office to the second story Master Suite. The new addition presents a sympathetic but sober façade to the neighborhood, but inside, is a refreshingly modern contrast to the formal interiors designed for the main rooms of the original house. Formal rooms were treated to sensitive but subtle restorations. Fireplaces were recommissioned, and new wood and antique marble mantels were installed to create focal points. Simple and elegant decorative metalwork was installed throughout to satisfy codes and add graphic lines to stairs, balusters, and exterior fencing.
